Something Cool & Blue: Midway’s Ice Castle Sets the Stage for Princess Brides

The stunning structure made entirely of ice creates a dramatic backdrop for wedding photography

Attention all local princess brides: If you’ve ever dreamed of having your wedding photos snapped at a castle, you’re in luck—sort of. This winter, the small city of Midway plays host to the Ice Castle, a grand acre-sized castle made entirely of ice. The castle sets the stage for a true winter wonderland—a cross between a scene from The Nutcracker and something straight out of Narnia.

Inspired by the Beehive State’s geological landscape, the stunning structure features frozen towers, archways, tunnels, caverns, slot canyons, and even thrones, all created by hand using icicles and water in place of bricks and mortar. During the day, the castle sparkles in a glacial blue hue; at night, thousands of LED lights embedded in the ice cast a multi-colored glow. The Ice Castle creates a dramatic backdrop for engagement and bridal photos. Case in point: These icy, elegant images by Jacque Lynn Photography.

The Ice Castle is the brainchild of Utah-based architect Brent Christensen. In 2009, Christensen built his first large-scale Ice Castle at Midway’s Zermatt Resort. Following the Ice Castle’s success, he went on to build similar structures in Colorado and Minnesota, attracting more than 300,000 visitors who stared in awe at the palatial creations.

This year’s Midway Ice Castle is now open and will remain open through March 1 (weather and conditions permitting). For hours, tickets, and more information, visit the Ice Castles website.
