More than 11 million people fell in love with Utah couple Dustin Reeser, owner of Reeser Elemental Design, and Spencer Stout, IT product manager at the University of Utah, after seeing their flash-mob proposal video at a Salt Lake City Home Depot on YouTube. Stout posted the August 30, 2013, video online and it immediately went viral. “We’ve been contacted by so many people who have told us how much the video has touched them and given them hope for their own future,” he says.

The duo planned to have a long engagement and get hitched in Southern California, the location closest to Utah where they could legally marry, but Hollywood came calling. They were one of the 33 couples to tie the knot on national TV during the 2014 Grammy Awards. “I think it’s probably every gay man’s dream to have Madonna, Beyoncé, or Katy Perry sing at his wedding, and we got all three!”

Following the Grammys, the Reeser-Stouts held a ring ceremony and reception at the Gallivan Center in Salt Lake on February 1, 2014. The celebration took place just weeks after U.S. District Judge Robert J. Shelby struck down the same-sex marriage ban in Utah on December 20, 2013.

Family and close friends attended, and one very special guest: pop singer Betty Who. She serenaded the duo with an acoustic version of her song “Somebody Loves You,” the tune featured in their proposal video, while their mothers walked them down the aisle. “We were surrounded by so much love and support. There was not a dry eye in the room.” •
