Summer Skin Rules from Celeste Hilling

Wanna look great this summer? No!? Me neither! *kicks over internet and runs off to the mountains* Just kidding; for those of us who do (we’re looking at you, brides-to-be), we sat down with Celeste Hilling, Skin Coach and CEO of Skin Authority, to talk about summertime skin relief and care.
We know how to prevent sunburns, but what can we do to prevent major damage when it happens? What soothes sunburns?
Sunburns happen to all of us; how you react to them makes a big difference. It is important to prevent and repair as your risk for melanoma doubles if you have had more than five sunburns.
When treating sunburn, you’ll want to get out of the sun and take a short, cool shower or bath. Do not use any bar soap or body wash that contains fragrance as they will dry and irritate the skin. As soon as you are out of the shower or tub, apply a light, fragrance-free moisturizer that contains anti-inflammatory ingredients. My go-to ingredients are mango, shea butter, aloe and cucumber. I don’t recommend using oils or heavy moisturizers on sunburns as they trap heat on the surface of the skin.
By keeping skin moisturized, it lessens the chances of peeling, which furthers long-term damage. If you experience blisters, don’t pop them as that can lead to infection. If you feel pain or discomfort, take Ibuprofen. If you have severe blistering over a large part of the body, are dizzy or have a fever, seek the advice of a physician. Stay hydrated.

Can the weather make skin oilier? What can we do to keep skin fresh and clean from oil, sweat and outdoor pollutants during these hot months?
Skin is oilier in hot weather for two main reasons: When you sweat, you deposit more oil on the skin and we tend to wear more sunscreen, which holds in the oil.
It’s likely your skin is also dehydrated. To avoid further dehydration, watch fragrances in products and avoid anti-bacterial soaps –both are drying. Instead, look for ingredients that are hydrating including vitamin D in an elixir form. I suggest using elixirs instead of heavy creams or serums, which tend to be oil-based.
People often think they should not exfoliate dehydrated skin, that’s a myth. You should exfoliate year-round. In the summer, the extra oil can become trapped in the dead skin causing breakouts and irritation. I suggest nightly at-home treatments, such as using a cream-based vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate) or gel-based Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) products. Does A/C affect the skin?
Yes, A/C is super dehydrating. With A/C, you are in a controlled climate that has very little moisture. This is true, too, with artificial heat in the winter. What’s the best way to keep skin fresh and pretty for the summer?
